The New York State Library is in the Cultural Education Center on Madison Avenue in Albany. Division of Library Development staff work in partnership with the state’s 72 library systems to bring cost-effective, high quality library services to the millions who use New York’s 7,000 academic, public, school and special libraries. Staff experts work with librarians, trustees, public officials, and local leaders to solve problems and find new ways of making library services and resources available to their communities. The State Library administers more than $130 million in state and federal aid to New York’s libraries and helps libraries take full advantage of state, federal and private funding programs.Ìý
Graduate Student Interns work closely with State Library staff to improve library services for all New Yorkers. Activities include but are not limited to assistance with program planning and coordination; contacts with library systems; meeting planning and organization; exhibits and presentations; report writing; grant-related activities; legislative and regulatory activities; use of online resources; PR and communications; research; data collection, analysis and presentation; web work and web site content review, etc.Ìý
The intern will have opportunities to learn about New York State's statewide library infrastructure of 72 library systems and 7,000 libraries. They will learn about DLD programs, policies and procedures from Library Development staff and State Library/OCE leadership. The student will learn about state and federal programs related to improving library services, focusing on the state aid for library construction program in particular. They will receive tours, participate in team, unit, OCE and SED staff meetings and other professional meetings (as appropriate) to help them better understand the scope of the New York State Library. The intern will receive training in agency/office policies and procedures, use of agency/office hardware and software tools, SED email, numerous online information and data systems and other tools needed to carry out their assignments and projects.
Any graduate student interested in library and information science, education, public policy, planning, research and management, political science and government, communications, marketing, writing or history will find these positions of interest. Students pursuing a graduate degree in Library and Information Science and/or those who may be interested in working in libraries or other information agency environments upon graduation are highly desirable.Ìý
Interns may work up to 20 hours a week, Monday through Friday between the hours of 8am and 5pm during the fall school semester.
Graduate students will be paid $19/hour for their internship with our Department.
