The С槼ºÖ±²¥ Office of Professional Discipline investigates and prosecutes cases involving professional misconduct committed by licensees from more than 50 different professions. The Prosecutions Division works with investigators and board members, negotiates settlements, drafts memos and briefs, and represents the office at conferences, proceedings and hearings.
Legal interns should be current law students. They will work with prosecuting attorneys and OPD staff who will discuss and review their work. Interns conduct legal and factual research and analyze professional misconduct matters that occur in New York as well as other jurisdictions. Interns draft memoranda to summarize facts, procedural history, legal issues and applicable rules and laws. In addition, they will have the opportunity to assist with hearing preparation, observe hearings, appear at settlement conferences and potentially aid in the drafting of pleadings. Under a newly approved practice order by the New York State Courts, interns may be permitted to participate in administrative hearings, under supervision of a prosecutor.
Law interns in this program will receive considerable feedback from supervising prosecuting attorneys with respect to their writing and legal analysis skills. Interns may also have the opportunity to assist with conferences and hearings under supervision.
All applicants should be matriculated as either a 2L or 3L at local law schools. OPD seeks students who demonstrate strong legal writing and analy1ical skills combined with an interest in public service and/or litigation practice.
Interns are expected to work approximately 8-20 hours per week with days and hours to be determined according to their schedule.
This is an unpaid position. We are happy to work with students to help them earn academic credit for their internship with our Department.
