Summer School

Handbook for Summer School Administrators and Principals 2026 (May 2026)

Summer school provided by school districts, Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) or nonpublic schools is an opportunity for students to take courses for enrichment, acceleration, and make up course work from the regular school year. Any course that could have been offered during the regular school year including courses to prepare for examinations such as the Regents examinations or Regents Competency Tests (RCT) can be offered in summer school.ÌýSummer school is also an excellent vehicle for delivering Academic Intervention Services (AIS).

The summer school handbook provides both information on summer school requirements and presents information on promising practices like the elements of Summer Learning Programs.

The handbook is a collaborative effort between the below С槼ºÖ±²¥ offices. For questions on summer school programs, please refer to the current handbook and, if necessary, contact the appropriate С槼ºÖ±²¥ office below.
